Since I can’t… how about some fun book recommendations instead?

Before we dive in, tell me: what’s the best book you’ve read this year so far? I’m always looking to add to my TBR pile.

From My Bookshelf

This might be my favorite part of writing these emails—getting to tell you what’s been stacked on my nightstand lately.

But now I’m curious: what’s your favorite part of this Bookshelf letter? I’d love to know. :)

Anyway, here’s a round-up of what I’ve been reading this past month:

Have you seen this one making the rounds on the internet? I actually had an early copy of From Genesis to Junia by Preston Sprinkle, but since my husband had Preston as a professor in college, I was going to let him read it first. But after three separate people insisted I should read it, I figured it wasn’t coincidence, and I slyly took it back for some light poolside reading.

Preston honestly explores the biblical texts on women in church leadership. I’m only four chapters in, but already I appreciate his gracious and humble tone, his deep commitment to what the Bible really says, and his even-handed approach to both complementarian and egalitarian interpretations of key passages. He treats Scripture with the authority it deserves as the Word of God, and presents differing views with respect, but is unafraid to point out when an argument is thin or forced.

In many ways, Preston and I have been on the same journey these last years, studying the same passages, reading the same books, wrestling with the same questions—and I find this invigorating! God’s Spirit clearly wants to communicate a message to His people in this generation.

Here’s how he explains his approach:

My goal here is to provide an honest evaluation of the biblical arguments—I’ll leave the application questions to other scholars, and to readers like you.1

My heart leapt when I read those words. Here’s an honest scholar surveying the theological groundwork, freeing me to offer some humble applications in my forthcoming book.

Here’s one more quote:

After paying closer attention to the text, I noticed something remarkable. The Gospel writers don’t just include women as disciples of Jesus. Rather, they highlight women as exceptional disciples who emulated the kind of radical obedience Jesus expected, often in contrast to the faithlessness of men—especially the twelve apostles. Over and over, women exhibited the very discipleship traits that male disciples failed to embody.2

I can’t stop thinking about that. Watch for this in your next readings, how the writers intentionally highlight women’s faith, courage, and obedience. It’s beautiful.

In our homeschooling this season, we’re listening to Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C. S. Lewis since we’d been roadtripping toward the ocean and it just seemed fitting. I’ve been particularly struck by Eustace’s story of conversion from dragon to boy again. The beauty of it brought tears to my eyes.

Lewis understood something profound about repentance: we cannot peel off the dragon skin ourselves, which feels especially appropriate this season of Lent:

So I started scratching myself and my scales began coming off all over the place… But just as I was going to put my feet into the water I looked down and saw that they were all hard and rough and wrinkled and scaly just as they had been before...

Then the lion said—but I don’t know if it spoke—“You will have to let me undress you.” I was afraid of his claws, I can tell you, but I was pretty nearly desperate now. So I just lay flat down on my back to let him do it. The very first tear he made was so deep that I thought it had gone right into my heart. And when he began pulling the skin off, it hurt worse than anything I’ve ever felt. […]

Well, he peeled the beastly stuff right off—just as I thought I’d done it myself the other three times, only they hadn’t hurt—and there it was lying on the grass: only ever so much thicker, and darker, and more knobbly-looking than the others had been. And there was I as smooth and soft as a peeled switch and smaller than I had been. Then he caught hold of me—I didn’t like that much for I was very tender underneath now that I’d no skin on—and threw me into the water. It smarted like anything but only for a moment. After that it became perfectly delicious and as soon as I started swimming and splashing I found that all the pain had gone from my arm.

And then I saw why. I’d turned into a boy again.

What a beautiful picture of being de-scaled, cleansed, and transformed into the new creation that Christ Jesus makes us (2 Corinthians 5:17). I don’t know how deeply this scene affected my children, but I was wiping tears from my eyes. Such is the power of good writing.

We’ve also been using the Marine Biology science unit study from The Good and the Beautiful this semester. Knowing that we’d visit several beaches and aquariums, I picked literature and a homeschooling science unit that would pair facts with field trips, and it has been absolutely delightful—both for them and for me. (Let me know if you’d be interested in a post all about how I curate book lists and curriculum for our homeschooling road trips. I’d love to share more!)3

At one point, my seven-year-old said, “How can God be so creative to make so many different ocean creatures?”

How indeed.

May we never lose the wonder of a child.

Shifting gears toward fiction—Last summer I attended a Christian fantasy writers’ conference and learned of a new genre: LitRPG, or literary role-playing game. I shook my head. We don’t need plots driven by video game mechanics, I thought. How does that even work?

But last month a writing friend of mine told me she’s writing a LitRPG series. There’s a whole generation that grew up on video games and is now discovering reading, and they’re famished for good books. When I asked for an intro to this new genre, she pointed me to All the Skills by Honour Rae.

I’ve listened to Book 1 and 2 and enjoyed them more than I thought I would. The protagonist is a young man who needs to collect cards to become a dragon rider to fight off the scourge that’s trying to destroy all that’s good in the world. Along the way, he learns important lessons about friendship, hard work, family, and the fight of good vs evil. (Note that this is written as YA, but there’s some mild language, theft, and warfare against evil.) I can’t say this is faith-based, but it’s been a fun way to learn about this new-to-me genre. Read with discernment.

I’m still making my way through Redeeming Eden by Ingrid Faro, though this has taken a backseat to Genesis to Junia. I find myself recommending this book to people in real life conversations whenever the topic of my book comes up. Definitely still enjoying it.

I also picked up The Fight for Female by Lisa Bevere, an impassioned plea to stand for female sexuality and for God’s good design for women. This is my first book by the author, and I appreciate her years of ministry and her heart to see women in this generation embrace the dignity and honor of being created in God’s image. The exegesis is a bit thin and it feels more like a cry of alarm than a strategic battle plan. Overall I think it adds an older-sister perspective and is yet another messenger showing we need to be paying attention to this topic, and I appreciate Lisa Bevere for adding to the conversation.

Writing Corner: 18,294 words!

I didn’t expect to get much writing done this month with all our traveling. But a few weeks ago, God made something clear to me: I can’t keep waiting and call it obedience.

It’s time to write.

So I said “yes” to writing a muddy draft.

I’ve been joining an 8am writing sprint and shooting for 500 words. Imagine my shock to see that I’d written over 18,000 words this past month! Not good words. But words that we can edit with time.

Thank You, Lord. And thank you to all who have been praying.

Bookish Buddies & Your Growing TBR Pile

Another unexpected joy of traveling this last month has been meeting writing friends in most of the towns we stopped in. It’s a unique perk of moving around every week, shooting off a text: “Hey, I’m in town next week. Want to meet up for coffee?”

My kids jokingly protest, “Mom, you know people everywhere!” But it’s been such an incredible part of their homeschool experience too—meeting numerous authors, a judge, a composer, an actress, a children’s book author, and more—they don’t realize yet what a special opportunity this is. Someday they’ll thank me… maybe. 😉

But here I thought I’d highlight a few authors (and of course, their books) that you might be interested in adding to your bookshelves. Because that’s what we’re all about here.

Bookshelf Chat

My dear friend Melissa has the most beautiful rainbow-color-coded bookshelves. Complete with a Belle-like bookshelf ladder! Isn’t it dreamy? 🤩

I tried once to organize my shelves by the color of the bookcovers, and I made it two shelves in before I broke out in a cold sweat and switched everything back to genre and author name. I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to find anything. But I like how it looks, so I left one single shelf rainbow-organized, and it makes me smile (and think of Melissa) every time I see it.

Tell me I’m not the only one who’s wrestled with bookshelf organization…

I loved the thoughtfulness and grace in this community. Some readers shared that they intentionally read different perspectives to better understand friends and loved ones. That kind of humility and curiosity is beautiful to see.

I’m continually grateful for the thoughtful, gracious spirit in this community. Even when we disagree, the tone here is gracious and kind—which is rarer on the internet than it should be.

How I Choose What to Read—And What I Recommend

Here’s how I decide what to read personally and what I recommend here on Substack and in my Bookshelf emails:

1. Christian liberty

In general, I lean toward freedom in personal choices, believing that “it is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1).

That means that I start from the assumption that most books are allowable for a mature, discerning believer. Jesus summarized the Law as love for God and love for neighbor (see Mark 12:28-34). When we walk in love and attentiveness to the Spirit, we can live freely.

(Note: I carefully curate what my children are permitted to read because their minds are still growing and need careful tending until they reach the age of maturity and personal discernment.)

2. Wisdom

At the same time: “everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial” (1 Corinthians 10:23). Christian freedom means we’re at liberty to choose whatever will build us up to become the people that God created us to be, to do the work God has prepared for us to do, and to enjoy this life that God has given us to delight in.

That’s personal to each of us, and as a professional writer, I read widely both out of enjoyment and from a desire to learn, research, and grow as a writer—both in fiction and nonfiction. Just because I read a book doesn’t mean you should read it too.

Additionally, certain books (I’m looking at you, smutty romances) are intentionally written to be addictive. Over time, repeated exposure can shape our expectations, relationships, and even even our brains.1 These genres call for personal caution: “‘I have the right to do anything’”—but I will not be mastered by anything,” Paul cautions the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 6:12.

3. God’s Spirit’s conviction and direction

How then do we know whether to read a book in freedom or put it away in wisdom? Thankfully, God’s Spirit promises to lead us when we ask Him for help.

When I’m unsure about a book, I often pause and ask the Holy Spirit to help me discern. Over the years, these are some of the questions He’s used to help direct me:

For fiction

• Am I enjoying this book, or am I being mastered by it?

• Am I living my real life, or am I escaping to my fictional worlds?2

• Is this book helping me love the people in my home—or distracting me from them? Do I need a break to clear my mind?

• Does this book celebrate the ways of darkness? Or does it celebrate the ways that Light will always overcome the darkness?

For nonfiction

• Am I being shaped more by this author’s opinions than I am by God’s own Word—reading it, meditating on it, memorizing it?

• Am I seeking a solution in this book before asking God to guide me in this area of need?

• Am I checking the arguments here against God’s Word, or am I taking the author’s word for granted?

• Who in my community am I discussing these ideas with—to parse, to discern, and to apply—so I’m not bloating on knowledge but growing in wisdom?

Before I share my final two guidelines, I’m curious:

4. Grace for each other

Because of this freedom and wisdom, believers will land in different places. Naturally, we’ll all have differing tastes and personal convictions in our reading lives. As we should (see #1 and #2 above). So in areas of liberty and love, let us be quick to extend grace toward each other:

“Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.” (Romans 14:4).

What a word.

5. Love over all

In all things, let us love one another. Let us love God with all that is within us (even our reading lives). And let our reading choices stir us up toward love and good deeds.

That doesn’t mean we never read something fun or light or fantasy just for the enjoyment of it. After all, if good wine is a gift from God, how much more is a delightful story well told a gift from the Creator of Life who spoke all things into existence through words! Let us enjoy good stories in all their variegated tellings. And may we always be led by love.

My Commitment to You

I hope something from that list was helpful to you. Maybe there’s one verse or one discernment question that you’ll take with you into your reading life this week.

But I want you to know that I don’t take your trust or your time for granted. It’s an honor to be given space in your day and in your inbox, even more so in a world that’s filled with noise and content overload.

So I want to clarify what kinds of books you can expect to read about here in Asheritah’s Bookshelf:

1. I’ll share books I’m personally reading: I usually read 8-10 books at a time, so there’s no shortage of new titles to share with you.3 I might include quotes or photos. Sometimes I might point out where I disagree with the author—hopefully with grace and love.

2. I’ll share books I think you’ll enjoy: I also skim books that come across my desk that may not right for me in this current season, but if I think they’ll be interesting and edifying for my readers, I’ll include them here.

3. I’ll try to disclose content warnings: you won’t find me recommending smutty romances or graphically violent reads (see #2 and #3 above), but if a book has captivated me and I think it may be interesting, valuable, or fun for you too, I’ll try my best to give you a heads’ up if there’s something other Christians may find objectionable.

   

4. I’ll share books we’re giving away: up to this point I’ve been giving away books from my own bookshelves.4 But we’re also partnering with faith-based publishers to start giving away copies of brand-new releases to our community. In that case, I may not have read a new title, but it’ll always be a publisher we’ve vetted and established a relationship with.

5. I’ll share books from writing friends: I want this Bookshelf community space to be permeated by a spirit of generosity, so if an author friend I know and trust writes with integrity and excellence, I want to introduce you to their books.5 We all want more Christian authors writing faith-filled books that celebrate Light overcoming darkness, right?

So that’s my commitment to you in this space.

Whew. That’s a lot.

But I’ve had this post swirling in my head for a long time, and I’m glad to have it here to share with you, because I know we’re going to have even better bookish conversations in the months to come.

Snow is slowly fading in the forested scene out the window, and not a moment too soon—we’ve finally finished The Long Winter, which felt long indeed.

I’ve spent the last hour drafting a post on whether Christians should read books we disagree with… and somehow I wrote 800 words before finishing the introduction. 🙈

Apparently, I have thoughts.

So instead of giving you a mini-lecture from the passenger seat, let me ask you:

Have you ever read a book you disagree with? Should Christians read books that challenge—or even contradict—our theology? And truthfully: have you ever judged a friend for books she had lined on her shelves?

From My Bookshelf (3 Books)

By far the most influential book I’ve been reading lately is Redeeming Eden: How Women in the Bible Advance the Story of Salvation, by Ingrid Faro and Joyce Koo Dalrymple. I truly can’t get it out of my head—especially the opening chapters on what it means that women bear the image of God and that Eve was formed from Adam’s “side.”

What I appreciate most is how this book holds Scripture in high regard while thoughtfully reexamining some of our inherited interpretations of familiar stories. And it shows how God delights in working with women to accomplish His purposes in the world.

This conversation has followed me everywhere—into the shower, into my Bible reading, even into the conferences I taught last month. Let’s just say… it’s very alive in my own writing right now.

I hope to finish Redeeming Eden in the next couple weeks as I settle into my new writing rhythm, but if you’re intrigued and want something that takes biblical scholarship seriously while remaining deeply rooted in Scripture, this one’s worth adding to your stack.

Next up: fiction. Because my brain occasionally needs a break.

I got The Line Between years ago after meeting Tosca Lee at a writer’s conference. She’s magnetic as a teacher—and an even stronger storyteller.

The premise? A young woman is expelled from an apocalyptic cult just as a global pandemic shuts down the world… and she’s tasked to transport the tissue sample that could lead to a vaccine. What’s wild is that Tosca wrote the pandemic plotline before 2020. The parallels are uncanny.

My favorite part was the first half, where dual timelines slowly unravel the protagonist’s faith within the cult while she’s racing to save the world. The second half slowed for me (I was more interested in the cult psychology than the pandemic arc), but by then I was fully invested in the FMC.

It’s written from a Christian worldview, but without preachy passages—faith is shown in motion.

Since February’s apparently the month of love, I try to read a marriage book around Valentine’s Day.

I first picked up Finding the Hero in Your Husband in 2021—and after filling several margins with notes of disagreement, I put it down.

I don’t always agree with the books I read (see opening question of this email). But in this case, I have the benefit of knowing the author. I texted Juli the first time I read it, and she was gracious and open to talking through my questions.

So I’m giving it another read this month. I’m hoping for another walk-and-talk to process it again.1 I’ll report back.

Writing Corner

I don’t have a wordcount to share this month. Between California, NYC, Charlotte, and now Florida, most of my writing energy has gone toward developing messages instead of manuscript pages.

While in NYC, Flaviu and I slipped into the Metropolitan Museum of Art for what felt like the most enchanting early Valentine’s date night.

I paused in front of this statue of St. Catherine of Alexandria—patron saint of scholars and students (and readers, in my unofficial opinion).2 I first learned about St. Catherine last fall in this marvelous little collection of Christian women and men throughout history. I was struck by her courage: a noblewoman who refused to marry the emperor and remained faithful to Jesus at the cost of her life. She may just show up in a future book. 😉

And then I spotted an ancient papyrus and saw “Mount” and “Sermon” in Greek. My heart leapt—an early manuscript of the Sermon on the Mount?!

Nope.

It was an extra-biblical text about Adam’s third son, Seth, on Mount Sinai. Slightly less thrilling.

Still, studying that fragile scrap of writing behind glass reminded me how powerful words can be. Even controversial ones. Even debated ones.

Maybe someday one of our journals will be displayed in a museum.

Actually—please don’t. Just burn mine. For everyone’s sake.

Back to modern writing life.

Aside from conference messages, most of my recent word count has gone toward emails and social posts about our new Bible study eCourse, Planted. I’m genuinely excited about it—it’s a gentle 21-day rhythm to help women meet God in His Word.3

Writing marketing copy, however? Not my spiritual gift.

Sometimes I feel like the sentences I draft for social media have the lifespan of a fruit fly. It makes me want to unplug from the internet and move to a remote cabin with an ancient typewriter.

I kid.

I’d miss you all.

And I’d get carpel-tunnel. I hear those typebars are killer on the wrists. lol

One of the fun things about being an author is that you make friends with other authors. And then they release books, and you get to celebrate with them. So I thought I’d add a regular feature here highlighting my bookish buddies and their brand-new books.

Jaime Jo Wright (and her daughter Chloe!) wrote Love and Baseball, about a book-loving teen who creates an AI boyfriend—only to have his real-life lookalike show up at her school months later.

I haven’t read it yet, but I’m intrigued by the clean premise, thoughtful tech twist, and the kind of story I’d love to share with my daughters someday.

I’M WRITING ANOTHER BOOK! 🎉

After a year of rest, prayer, and careful discernment, the Lord has clearly led me into a new season—partnering with Tyndale Publishers on not just one book, but a long runway of work in the years ahead. When the timing was right, He opened the door wide, and I’m stepping through with gratitude (and a little holy trembling).

This first book is a Christ-centered celebration of the sacred influence of women as image bearers of God in our homes, our churches, and our world. I hope to elevate the conversation beyond polarizing debates and instead share a vision of womanhood that’s rooted in Christ and saturated with Scripture—one that reshapes our imaginations to see and celebrate women’s God-given beauty, strength, and generational influence.

That’s… a lot to pack into one book.

And if it weren’t a fire burning in my bones I’d be terrified. 🫣

But He who calls us is faithful, and I am convinced our generation of women—and our daughters and granddaughters—need this message.

We need to know the heart of God for what it means to live as His daughters, together.

• Pray that I would write with boldness and conviction, that I would not shrink back for fear of being misunderstood.

I’ve never felt more fear or spiritual resistance than I have stepping into this project. Please pray for protection from the enemy’s schemes, and that I would boldly proclaim the good news of Jesus to our generation of women who desperately need Him.

From My Bookshelf

Now, on to the reason many of you are here: books we’ve been reading and loving this winter.1

First, if you missed it, the comments on last month’s Bookshelf email turned into a treasure trove of Christmas reading recommendations. Truly, our community has the best taste.

At Brittney Pelletier’s suggestion, I read The Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews and it was everything I wanted in a Christmas novella: cozy, atmospheric, and quietly romantic.

One reader also suggested The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder as a family read-aloud, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. We’re in the middle of the coldest snap here in Ohio (schools literally cancelled classes yesterday because the windchill made it feel like -8°F. Brrrrrrrr.)

As we listened to the chapter where Laura and Carrie fight their way through a blizzard, we were driving to a winter hike of our own. Forty-five minutes later, with numb fingers and frozen noses, we had a whole new appreciation for settlers who lived before heated cars and weather apps.

I’ve also begun Beth Moore’s newest Bible study, Walking with God, and from the first page, I was struck by her honesty and warmth, how she weaves storytelling, Scripture, and sound doctrine together so naturally.

The metaphor of walking with God is one I return to again and again in my own life and faith.2 It’s such a tender picture of God’s desire for daily, ongoing relationship—one that stretches from Genesis to Revelation.

Because this theme matters so deeply, I asked our friends at Tyndale if they’d be willing to give away a few copies of Walking with God to our Bookshelf readers—and they generously said yes!

Last night, I stayed up far too late finishing The Girl from the Hidden Forest by Hannah Linder. A few chapters in, I assumed it would be a sweet, predictable regency romance… but halfway through, the story took a darker turn I didn’t see coming. I couldn’t put it down.

And that cover? Absolutely stunning. I’m off to find more Hannah Linder books now.

Do you ever pick up a book for its cover? I certainly do. And that was what drew me to The Seed of Woman, by Nana Dolce. It’s a great place to start if you’re newer to studying women in Scripture—or if you find yourself able to name only a few of the most well-known Bible women. Nana Dolce offers a clear, big-picture overview grounded in a Reformed perspective that helps tie each story into God’s larger redemptive plan.

Next month, I’ll share a few other books I’m reading that approach women in the Bible from a more literary lens, a church history lens, and a cultural lens, so if this topic grabs you, there are plenty more recommendations coming.

Bookshelves Around the World

I’m drawn to bookshelves like a moth to a flame.3 I can’t walk past one without slowing down to read the titles on the spines. 🫣 (Am I alone in this?)

My camera roll is full of bookshelf photos from my travels, and now and then I share them here, alongside bookshelves sent in by readers from our own community.

I stumbled on this little free library in a coffeeshop in Oklahoma City a couple months ago, while in the city for an event, and I was just charmed by the eclectic collection. Do you have a little free library that you stop by regularly?

The top shelf are all signed books, most of them first editions. I have only read 9 of them. The second one is my Bible shelf with journals and books to help me understand more and learn more about all the stuff I missed or forgot over time. The third of five you can sort of see is my reference shelf.

We just got back from a magical weekend in NYC, soaking in all the Christmasy sights and sounds of the city.

This trip has been on my bucket list for years, and it was just as enchanting as I’d hoped it would be. From gorgeous trees all decked out…

…to exploring the city with croissants and hot coffee in hand…

…to watching a Christmas pageant in the historic Grace Church of Brooklyn Heights…

…to witnessing the precision and grace of the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall…

…and so much more. It was a literary and holiday extravaganza, and I loved every second. Well, almost.

We nearly got trampled at the Rockefeller tree as a massive swarm of tourists pushed to catch a glimpse of the iconic evergreen. (I do not recommend making this stop on a Saturday night. Word to the wise.)

But my favorite part, by far, was visiting the New York Public Library again. I may or may not have squealed when I saw the lions out front wearing their holiday wreaths:

Once inside, the towering tree in the main hall was easily the most beautiful one we saw in the whole city.

And then we got to see Charles Dickens’ actual writing desk and original copy of A Christmas Carol! We read this aloud every December, so it was a special delight to have my kids geek out with me on this literary treasure, too!

Okay, I didn’t mean to slip into full travelogue mode, but NYC at Christmas is the backdrop of so many great stories—Annie, Miracle on 34th St, Home Alone, Red & Lulu—I just couldn’t help myself.

On My December Nightstand

On the long drive home to Ohio, I listened to Christmas in the Castle Library by Ann Swindell (watch my book chat with the author below), and it was so good, I switched to paperback when we got home so I could finish it. Instead of unpacking. 🙈

Now that we’re home, I’m spending my mornings with Beloved, Francis Chan’s new devotional book, and my evenings with A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews (recommended by a reader in last month’s Bookshelf email comments!).

I have another Christmasy book (A Sea View Christmas by Julie Klassen) on my nightstand to pick up once I’ve finished my current read, and I’ve got The Mary We Forgot by Jennifer Powell McNutt on rotation as both audiobook and paperback (because yes, I’m the crazy book lady reading eight books at once).

And of course, we’re continuing our daily read-aloud of A Christmas Carol, with these activity books to keep little hands busy while we listen to this favorite (and free!) dramatization of Dickens’ Victorian English.

Do you see that little red book in the lower right corner of the photo above? This year, we’re also reading through Unwrapping the Names of Jesus together as a family, and it’s bringing my heart so much joy to lead my own kiddos through these gifts that Jesus offers us in His names.

Writing Corner

Okay, deep sigh. I didn’t write much this month.

Between holidays, travels, events, and a death in the family, my writing rhythm fell apart. And you know what? That’s okay.

What I’ve needed this season is to be present with my loved ones, to get good sleep, and to spend time resting with Jesus.

But I do get to share some exciting bookish news here:

What a gift of God! I’m honored that so many families keep unwrapping the names of Jesus year after year! 🎉

Looking forward, I’d love to finish my current middle-grade draft by the end of the month, and I have a loose plan to do just that, but even if I don’t, it’s going to be okay. I’m not on deadline, and this one’s for my own kids. What they need is a present, rested mama, not a stressed author trying to juggle too much at once.

The writing I have kept up is my journaling. These private words won’t likely see the light of day. They don’t count toward a “word count.” But writing helps me think. Writing helps me pray. Writing helps me see the fingerprints of God every day.

So I keep writing, not because it’s my job but because it’s how I keep delighting in Jesus. This private writing is the secret place that’s just for Him and me.

Welcome to the very first edition of Asheritah’s Bookshelf! Think of this as our cozy corner to chat about the books we’re loving and delight in the wonder of story.

I want this to feel like a fireside chat where we can share the books that are keeping us up way too late at night—because let’s be honest, that “just one more chapter” feeling is real! In this issue, I’m going to share a few books I’ve been loving this month and share a few things that have been inspiring me.

Plus, I want to invite you to share your own bookshelves! There’s a little spot at the end of this newsletter where you can send in pictures of the books on your shelf, so keep reading.

Imagine we’re sitting beside my fireplace, flanked by bookshelves, warm drinks in hand. I’d probably ask: “So… what good books have you read lately?”

It’s one of my favorite ways to start a conversation. And truly, I want to hear from you!

Let me introduce you to a few books that have been keeping me company lately...

Protector by Megan Schaulis
I wasn’t sure what to expect from a sci-fi, dystopian retelling of Esther, but Protector surprised me in the best way. About 25 pages in, I found myself completely drawn into Novalise’s world—an Esther-like heroine competing to become the king’s bodyguard (such a fun twist!). The familiar beats of the biblical story are there, but the setting and stakes make it feel fresh and gripping.

Neither Complementarian nor Egalitarian by Michelle Lee-Barnewall
This one came recommended by my friend Juli Slattery while we were discussing the Evangelical gender debate at a house party this summer. (I’m such a fun party guest, y’all.) Juli told me I’d love it, and she was right. It leans more academic, but in a deeply thoughtful way. Instead of rehashing the usual egalitarian vs. complementarian debate, Barnewall reframes the whole conversation through the lens of Kingdom priorities like love, unity, sacrifice, and reversal. It’s less about picking sides and more about asking better questions. I didn’t agree with everything (I rarely do), I found it thoughtful, timely, and full of insight I’m eager to explore in my own research. A few quotes:

“The ethic of Jesus ‘spells an end to self-assertiveness and self-glorifying and the beginning of self-forgetfulness that already submits to God’s sovereignty and serves the neighbor.’”1

“Jesus’s actions and words are a significant statement about the acceptance of women in the kingdom of God. […] Not only were women accepted and presented as exemplary disciples, but in a surprising reversal, they are even portrayed as being more faithful than the Twelve….”2

An Unhurried Life: Following Jesus’ Rhythms of Work and Rest by Alan Fadling
I’ve had this book on my shelf for years, but this year of Jubilee felt like it was finally the right time to pick it up, and I’ve been slowly working my way through it. It reads a bit like the older cousin of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry—gentle, thoughtful, and full of holy nudges. The theme is simple: love is unhurried. When I’m rushed or stressed about my work, convinced “there’s just not enough time to get it all done,” I often miss opportunities to love the people right in front of me. I want to learn to walk at the pace of Jesus. Slow down my busyness. Do only the good work God has actually prepared for me today.

There are—seriously—so many good quotes I’ve underlined. Here are just a few of them:

“Jesus intends to transform us dramatically. He wants us to come to reflect the beauty, goodness and rootedness of an oak tree. He’s planted us. He will tend us. He will do what it takes to deepen and strengthen our roots in him.”3

“Am I following Jesus in my own way of working? Is all the work I’m doing in keeping with what the Father is doing and how he is doing it? Do I know what the Father is doing in the lives of people around me who are affected by my work? Am I working in concert with the Father or, perhaps unaware, in conflict with him? Might I find myself overdoing something God may later have to undo?”4

“I keep thinking that ‘real’ life is all the tasks and emails and bills and projects and other things that fill my schedule. But Jesus himself is real life. And real life in Jesus is eternal and spacious, not condensed, compressed, compacted. Real life is huge and unhurried.”5

“I hurry, in part, because I labor under the false belief that I don’t have enough time for what is good and necessary for me. …Holy leisure is a way of recognizing that everything God has given me to do can be done without anxious hurry.”6

A Not So Fictional Fall by Savannah Scott
This novel popped up on my Instagram radar when I was craving a light, autumn read—and it totally delivered. Imagine a sweet romance where a bookstagrammer meets her favorite romance author… and surprise, he’s not at all who she expected. Cue a marriage-of-convenience storyline (to save him from being sent back to France), lots of playful antics, and a tale that’s simply fun. It’s a clean, heartwarming escape before you swap out the pumpkins for Christmas lights.

In the Flo by Alisa Vitti
When I was in a burnout stage a few years back, I learned (the hard way) that I need to honor the limitations of this physical body God gave me. This book explains women’s hormones and how each phase of our monthly cycle affects not just our fertility but also our productivity, wellness, relationships, and overall perspective. Vitti gets a little woo-woo in places, so read with discernment, but her core idea—that women thrive when we honor the way God designed our 28-day rhythm—is brilliant.7

“Women have a second biological clock, and it is equally as valuable as the 24-hour clock. The 28-day clock can be measured; it is predictable; and it demands the same respect, attention, and priority as the 24-hour clock.”8

Untitled (by Yours Truly)—For our family read-aloud, we’re reading a special little story… one that I’m writing every day. I share more about this in the Writer’s Corner below. :)

Confession time: I cannot seem to read just one nonfiction book at a time. I start with great intentions… then another shiny title calls my name, and suddenly I’m in the middle of eight books with leaning towers of TBR all over the house.

So my November goal? Finish what I started and head into 2026 with a clean slate (and plenty of room for your recommendations). Be honest—how many books are you in the middle of right now?

Writing Corner

This month is Novel November! At least, that’s what those of us attempting to draft a novel in 30 days are calling it. 😊 It used to go by the official name National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), where the goal was to write 50,000 words in one month. I did that once, back in 2021, and it was SO much fun!

This year, I’m doing it again… with a twist.

As I mentioned in my BookChat with Sara above, I’m working on a middle-grade novel, the second in a series that’s still hush-hush (shhhh!)—and it’s been such a life-giving joy to subcreate with God inside this storyworld that points to His big story!

I plotted the whole thing on index cards… which were promptly splattered when a child watered the houseplants. (I mean, I did want my kids involved in this project, but not quite like that.) Thankfully, they’re still mostly legible. At least to me. 😉

Most mornings, I sneak downstairs to my basement office before the house wakes up and draft a chapter. Then, during our homeschool morning basket, I read that fresh chapter aloud to my kids. It’s become our little ritual—they offer feedback, ask questions, and giggle in all the right places. Their enthusiasm helps shape the story day by day, and honestly? It keeps me accountable when I’d otherwise be tempted to skip writing “just this once.” They want to know what happens next.

I’m a little over 10,000 words in and hoping to hit 35,000 by the end of the month and finish the first (very messy) draft. I’ll let you know next month how it all goes.

Someday I’ll tell you the God-sized story of how I came to write fiction at all… but until then, can I simply encourage you?

If God has tucked a creative dream in your heart—a book, a painting, a poem, a flower garden, a quilt, a song—make a little room to explore it with Him. You don’t have to hit 50,000 words or color inside the lines. You just need enough quiet courage to say yes to the beauty He longs to bring into the world through you.

Your small faithfulness matters more than you know.
