It’s May in Ohio, and it finally feels like spring.

Every season is beautiful, but spring is hands-down my favorite, especially when I get to spend it with lovely women around the country, sharing the Good News of Jesus!

A couple weeks ago my family and I were in Morehead, KY with the ladies of Better Life Church:

This week we’re headed to Mackinac Island to share with 500 sisters at the Winsome Women Retreat. A few days later we’ll head down to lower Michigan to be with the women at Woodside Bible Church… and the following weekend, we’ll be in Nevada—smiles and hugs and the Word of God all around.

All in all, I’ll be traveling out of state five times this May, which is very unusual for me. Honestly, the pace pace feels a bit intimidating, but I’m so grateful for the chance to meet so many of you in person!

(And come June, I will absolutely be hobbiting at home full-time. No regrets.) :)

Okay… this month we have a fun reader Q&A.

I’ll share my thoughts, but I want to hear yours too, so be sure to leave a comment at the end!

Oh, I know that feeling well, especially when opening a brand-new Bible: “I don’t want to mess up it up!” The intimidation is real.

First, let me gently make the case for why you should write in your Bible.

We live in a world of information overload.
Instagram reels. YouTube shorts. TikTok videos.

How much content have you already consumed today?

Our brains are constantly processing noise—and if we’re not carefully, the Bible can start feeling like just another stream of information. Something we skim… and move on from.

We don’t want that.

We want the Word of God to stay with us.

To transform us.

So we have to slow down. We have to give our minds—and our hearts—space to process what we’re reading.

Research actually shows that when you write something down, you’re far more likely to remember it—and to act on it.1

Writing isn’t about making our Bibles pretty. It’s about helping truth take root in our hearts.

So here are a few simple ways I write in my Bible, ways that help me slow down and metabolize what I’m reading… so it moves from information → to transformation → to adoration of the Living Word who still speaks today.

Here are five things I write in my Bible:

1. One thing I learn about Jesus: Every day I read, I aim to write down just one thing. That’s it. One. The Bible is one big story that points to Jesus, so I read through this lens first. Even in the Old Testament, I’m asking: how is this pointing forward to Him? Reading this way turns Scripture from a daily chore into a daily treasure hunt. (I share more in this video if you’re interested.)

2. Personal prayers: Especially in the psalms, I’ll personalize what I’m reading—praying it over myself or my family. I always add the date, but I keep details minimal since my Bible is often out in the open. (The deeper details go in my private journals.) Over time, my Bible has become a sacred record of meeting God—through both highs and lows.

3. Sermon notes: Our pastor teaches through books of the Bible *(sometimes for a whole year), so I highlight, underline, and jot notes as we go. A few years ago, I switched to note-taking Bible journals just for sermons—more on that below. There were simply too many notes to fit in the tiny margins of my regular Bible. (Bible-nerd problems. 😂)

4. Book/commentary notes: I read A LOT, and when a line or ideas brings clarity to a passage—I’ll write it in the margins or on a sticky note if it’s longer.2 I’ve also written notes from The Bible Project videos over the years from several Bible-in-a-year plans.

5. Cross references: The Bible constantly links to itself through repeated ideas, themes, and stories. The longer you sit with the Word, the more you start to see those connections. It’s beautiful that way! I share more in this video, because it’s honestly so much fun! Learning to read Leviticus alongside Hebrews changed everything for me. Suddenly I was seeing Jesus on every page, and it’s never been the same. (Yes, many Bibles come with cross references included—but there are so many more to discover and write for yourself!)

   BONUS: Anything that grabs my attention: Some days, it’s just one note (see #1 above). Other days my pen can’t keep up. I also like to highlight (I have a system—see this video), underline, circle, draw arrows (especially in Paul’s letters—if you know, you know)… and let my Bible reflect my journey with Jesus.

I’ve also tried Bible journaling with paint and markers… and it’s just not my thing. But I have friends who create beautiful artwork as an act of worship—and I love that. Truly.

For me personally, I avoid covering the words of Scripture. Any notes I add are removable, because at the end of the day, His words matter most.

And I know some of you hesitate to write in your Bible because it feels like it might dishonor God’s Word. I understand the desire to honor Scripture, but I’d gently caution us not to add rules where God hasn’t.

Jesus tells us the greatest command is to love God and love others. Beyond that, we walk in the freedom of the Spirit (see Galatians 5:1). So instead of carrying unnecessary pressure, bring this to the Lord and let Him guide you.

Either way, may we become people of the Word, who read our Bibles and write them on our hearts. May the Word of God be living and active among us.

Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your Word.
Help us treasure it and delight in how You reveal Yourself through its pages. Give us an insatiable hunger to know You more.
Keep teaching us what we don’t yet see.
We love You, because You first loved us.

• These past weeks, I’ve been cutting flowers from my garden and bringing them inside—a small joy that makes the whole house feel like spring. Their fragrance lingers in the air and their delicate petals speak of an Artist who delights in beauty… even more than we do. - Asheritah

Have you ever had your stomach hit the floor? Panicked in the space of a millisecond?

Yeah, me too.

The headlines offer endless fodder for fear and countless opportunities to worry. In our personal lives, medical diagnoses, financial crises, and even interpersonal conflict at work can threaten to make our lives miserable.

Last month, I lost all my online work here. Every note, every newsletter, every devotional and delight I’d curated for our community—gone with a glitch.

In the grand scheme of things, a tech blackout isn’t a terminal diagnosis or a fatal accident. I knew that. And I was grateful for that. But this glitch happened mere days before launching our biggest project yet—a 21-day guided Bible study journey our team had been building for six months.

Gone. In the blink of an eye.

A crisis in our micro-universe.

I panicked. I DM’d support.
I argued with an infuriating AI bot.
I waited for a human agent from Substack to help me. No one showed up.

And then—eventually—I stepped away from the screen.

Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is stop refreshing the page.

I looked at the gray Ohio sky, cuddled with my kids, and warmed up by the fireplace.

I released what I couldn’t fix into the hands of God and did the next right thing. Started over with a simple hello, introducing myself again to Substack:

It felt like a blind act of faith.

And it makes me think of the blind man Jesus pauses to heal on the side of the road, mixing mud with His saliva, spreading it over his eyes, telling him to go wash in the pool of Siloam (see John 9). I’ve thought of that story countless times this week. Jesus could have healed the man instantly. But He doesn’t.

Jesus invites the man to participate in his healing by trusting and obeying.

Imagine walking through crowded streets with mud on your eyes. The embarrassment. The questions. The steady, wholehearted trust in Jesus that kept him going:

“Go,” [Jesus] told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. (John 9:7 NIV)

You can’t substitute obeying with waiting. If the blind man had waited for the mud to work by the side of the road, he’d have died blind. It was his obedience to the Word of Jesus that made him whole.

Are you waiting for a miracle… while God is waiting for your yes?
What’s your next step? A relationship, a phone call, a decision He’s already made clear?

I cannot create world peace. I’m not in those rooms. You probably aren’t either. But we can each be peace-makers and beauty-bringers in the places God has placed us.

Going back to my meltdown moment… that simple “hello” reached farther than anything I’d written here before. I met people I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Launch day came, and we’d duck-taped together a workable solution. Even so, thousands of our readers never received the announcement.

So I practiced releasing this launch into God’s hands, doing what has been entrusted to us and trusting Him with the rest.

Literally casting my prayers on God as I’d drift off to sleep at 2am:

“…casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].” (1 Peter 5:7 AMP)

Again and again.

Trust and obey.

Obey and trust.

Every time our team found another glitch, we’d work to fix it, and cast our cares on Him.

Eventually, we received an email from an actual human from Substack, who worked with me to fix the Substack glitch. (Hooray for humans! AI bots won’t take over the world, I’m convinced.)

My posts are back. My handle is restored. Hopefully these emails are showing up in your inbox and not your junk folder. (*fingers crossed*)

And I’ve made new friends here because of it.

The cliché says that God works in mysterious ways. But I don’t think that’s the whole story.

I think God invites us to work with Him through the chaos, to pray through what we fear, and to rest when our part is done. To trust and obey.

It’s a grace to know when to stop striving.

And He works all things for good—to make us more like Jesus, and reveal the glory of His goodness.

God doesn’t waste the disruptions.1
He rarely does.

Start small.

Choose one verse this week. Just one.
Circle a word that stands out.
Underline a promise.
Write a short prayer in the margin.

You don’t need a complicated system. You just need willingness.

• For the first time, our family is attempting to snowbird in Florida for a couple months (yes, all crammed in our little blue travel trailer again). I’m loving all the family time we’re getting together, soaking up the Florida sunshine, meeting online friends and their families in real life, and stretching out these childhood years just a little longer. —Asheritah

• I keep a helium tank at my house at all times because I love balloons so much. I always want to be ready to blow up a balloon bouquet if something needs celebrated. In the last few weeks when we were excited about something, my daughter suggested we blow up some balloons to take them with us. It brought such a smile to my face! —Hannah

• I recorded a Focus on the Family radio interview about Delighting in Jesus… a year ago. And it’s finally live! Apparently, God works on a different release schedule than I do. Listen here! —Asheritah

• The sounds and signs of spring are beginning to arrive, and it brings a smile to my face every time! Between the birds chirping outside the window as I sit at my desk and the daffodil shoots pushing up through the dirt in the tiny garden bed, the small but sure hints of a season shifting is doing my soul good. Even though I'm a big fan of winter, I'm thankful for the reminder that God is really good at bringing new life and beauty to the places that seem dormant, forgotten, or empty. —Kaitlyn

• This might sound frivolous, but shopping for swimsuits is on my list of least favorite things, so when I found one that I’m loving, I thought it’s worth sharing. This swimsuit looks cute & modest with a built-in skirt, flattering with a ruched waist, and doesn’t break the bank. I get so many compliments from other moms when I wear it, and I find I’m not thinking about my body but enjoying my kids at the waterpark, which is as it should be, right? —Asheritah3

  

• During Lent, our family gathers around a Lenten wreath and follows Asheritah’s family devotions as a way to journey through this season together. I love this weekly rhythm—the quiet moments, the flicker of candlelight, the intentional pause at the start of a busy week. What I cherish most, though, is hearing my five-year-old daughter’s heartfelt responses to the question asked each week: “What do you want to say in response to Jesus?” Her simple, sincere answers remind me of the beauty of childlike faith and make this season all the more meaningful. 😊 —Kathryn

Here we are, just a few weeks into the new year, and somehow it’s already February. How are your Bible rhythms going?

If you feel like you’ve fallen behind, you’re not alone. You want to grow deeper in God’s Word… but you’re probably also wondering:

I get it. For years Bible study felt like something I should be good at, but often wasn’t. I wrestled with guilt when I missed a day, distraction when I did sit down, and overwhelm when I tried to do all the things.

But here’s what I’ve learned, and it’s a truth I’ll preach to my dying breath:

God delights to meet you in His Word—even when you come with only a few minutes and an honest desire to know Him.

You don’t need hours of uninterrupted quiet or a seminary degree to meet with God.

You just need a willing heart.

I’m writing this just days after teaching God’s Word to 250 women at a Delighting in Jesus conference in Redlands, CA

It was a holy, humbling gift to witness the Spirit of Jesus at work—lifting heavy burdens, comforting grieving hearts, and gently freeing women from patterns of sin and shame. Together, learned how to keep turning back to Jesus for Him to restore our joy even in the midst of very real pain.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

There is peace.

There is joy.

And friends, nothing compares to the sound of hundreds of women lifting their voices in praise, thanking God for what He has done and trusting Him for what He will do next.

Honestly? It felt like heaven brushing up against earth.

Truth is, we have no idea how 2026 is going to go.

And that unknown could be terrifying.

✨ Favorite Memory
Hiking up to Dream Lake at Rocky Mountain National on our SW camping trip. It was the hardest hike of my life—and all three of our kids did it with us! The view was phenomenal, and I was so proud of their stamina.

📖 Best Thing I Read
An Unhurried Life by Alan Fadling (it took me about three months, but hands-down the best book I read in 2025).1

And The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron (not yet finished and not from a Christian POV, but such a helpful guidebook for blocked creatives).

📝 Best New Habit
Journaling (almost) every day.

After years of struggling to journal consistently, The Artist’s Way’s “morning pages” habit gave me permission to just… write. I filled five journals in 2025 alone. Pages not for public consumption, but sacred spaces to lay my heart bare—and to hear Jesus comforting, correcting, and guiding me in deeply personal ways.

🍽️ Best Meal or Recipe

Flaviu and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary.
I celebrated a whole year-long sabbatical Year of Jubilee.
And I signed a new book contract (yippee!!)—which means new books will be coming soon. I can’t wait to tell you more soon!

👀 Goal Sneak Peek for 2026
We’ve got more fun family trips and more book writing this year, but I’m most excited to be reading through the Bible in a year with my twelve-year-old daughter.

Last year at the True Woman ‘25 Conference she committed to do a Bible read-through with Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and thousands of women around the world. Talk about proud mama moment. 🥹

Before you keep reading, pause for a moment:

Where did you see God’s goodness last year—even in small ways?

You might jot it down… or whisper a quiet thank-you prayer right where you are.

As I ended the year reflecting on 2025, I kept returning to Psalms 126:

“When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
Our mouths were filled with laughter then,
and our tongues with shouts of joy. […]

Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy.
Though one goes along weeping, carrying the bag of seed,
He will surely come back with shouts of joy, carrying his sheaves.”

If you’ve been around here for a while, you might remember that a few years ago I struggled through severe burnout, a mysterious illness, and deep hopelessness. I was ready to shut down our online ministry. To become a hermit. That season felt like a downward spiral into darkness and despair.

But God.

At my lowest, He was nearest, even when I didn’t feel Him. Jesus, ever the Faithful Friend, walked with me at the slow pace of love.

And He brought me out of that season of sorrow into a spacious place of abundant joy.

(If you’re still waiting for your “spacious place,” friend, you are not behind. God is not in a hurry with your healing.)

Truly, those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy!

What a great reversal.

As I look back over 2025, I can’t help but see how God reversed every plan the enemy had for evil and turned it for good (see Genesis 50:20). He has filled our home with laughter and our lives with His choicest blessings.

The King of the Universe delights in giving His children good gifts.

I know many in our community are walking through deep sadness, grief, and loss. If that’s you, I’m so sorry you’re carrying so much, friend.

And you are not alone.

The Good Shepherd has never left your side.
The Man of Sorrows grieves with you.
Our Great High Priest intercedes for you when you have no words.

Emmanuel is with you in the darkness.

Know that the night won’t last forever.
The sun will rise on the horizon.
The seeds planted in tears, you’ll reap with shouts of joy.

And the One who holds your future will wipe every tear and reverse every curse and restore laughter to your heart.

I know He’ll do it for you—because He promises it in His Word, and because He did it for me too.

Joy is closer than you think.

Regardless of what 2026 holds—for us, for our countries, or for our world—we can trust the One who holds us, and our tomorrows.

Because His Word always holds true.

May I pray the blessing of Psalm 128 over you as you begin this year? (You might place a hand over your heart and receive this blessing as your own today.)

“How happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in His ways!
You will surely eat what your hands have worked for.
You will be happy and it will go well for you.”
Psalm 128:1-2 CSB

Amen.

So may it be, for you and for me, and for all we love.

Can I be honest? The holiday pressure was already creeping in… until my kids reminded me of something I’d forgotten.

Last week, I sat down expecting a simple Bible memory moment with my kids… and instead they started listing the times God saved our lives. I was not ready for that.

I had just read aloud:

“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His love endures forever!”
Psalm 136:1 NIV

And:

“Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts!”
Psalm 105:2 NIV

Then I asked them: “What are some of your favorite marvelous deeds that God has done—either in biblical history or in our family’s story?”

I expected the typical Sunday School answers—parting the Red Sea, Jesus rising from the dead—and those definitely made their list.

What I didn’t expect was how quickly personal stories came pouring out:

• “That time when you were nearly forcefully taken from your mom and put up for adoption as a newborn baby in Greece, but God protected you.”

• “That time when I was a baby and almost died in the hospital, but God healed me.”

• “That time I nearly fell off the side of a cliff on our Southwest trip, but God got me safely to the ground.”

Be still my heart. I wasn’t expecting that depth from the get-go! I was even more surprised by how quickly the stories rolled off their lips.

This is something we regularly practice in our home: we narrate God’s faithfulness in our everyday lives—so the next generation knows that God still works miracles in our world today:

The smallest things catch my heart—sometimes for the briefest moment.

Last Thursday, at my daughter’s annual check-up, it struck me that this was the last time we’d see Dr. Wells. Due to an insurance change, we have to switch pediatricians. After years of her caring for our children through their many ailments and growing pains, we’d have to say goodbye.

Or that moment last week when we arrived at our neighborhood’s Fire Station Open House two minutes after it ended. They could have turned us away, but the fire marshal welcomed our kids up into the yellow truck and drove them around the block—earning wide grins and a few hoots and hollers.

I think too of the way my children quietly listened to our read-aloud last week. (We finally finished Anne of Green Gables!) They were each engrossed in their own handiwork as we gathered around the fire, and I wanted to press this fleeting moment into my heart to cherish forever.

Tiny moments, some barely noticeable—and yet, in each, I catch a glimmer of God’s goodness.

James 1:17 reminds us:

“Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
who does not change like shifting shadows.”

Every good and perfect gift is from above.

But every one of those gifts comes through people—ordinary, beautiful people whom God uses as His hands and feet.

And if we’re honest, we sometimes forget to thank them.

November is a great month to practice thankfulness. And the more we give thanks, the more our daily joy increases, too.1

But what if we took our gratitude one step further and thanked the people through whom His kindness flows?

Because your simple spoken “thank you” might just become someone else’s glimmer of joy, a small token of God’s love and grace in their life that day.

So here’s a simple challenge: each day this November, take a moment to thank one person God has used to bless you. It could be your child’s teacher, your mail carrier, your pastor, or the friend who always listens without judgment.

We’ve created a printable for you below (keep scrolling) to give you ideas each day. You can save it to your phone or post it on your fridge. This is a great challenge to do by yourself or with children or grandchildren, too! And while you can share your #30daysofthanks on social media, I encourage you to keep it local, keep it small, keep it simple.

I think we’re going to deliver some freshly baked cookies to our local fire station and pediatrician’s office this week.

You could write a note, send a message, or whisper a quiet “thank you.” It doesn’t have to be big or public—sometimes the smallest words make the biggest difference. And “your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:4).

And who knows? Maybe that reward is more joy in your own heart, too.

Another gratitude practice is thinking of fun or unique names or attributes of God for each letter of the alphabet. Begin with the letter “A” and tell God everything you appreciate about Him that begins with that letter. Then move on to the letter “B,” and so on.

• Lately, I sense God inviting me deeper into trusting Him—and discovering the joy that comes from not having to carry it all myself. Surrender means giving up control, yes… but it also means stepping into freedom from needing to shoulder all the responsibility myself. I haven’t read The Freedom of Surrender yet, but it looks like the perfect companion for this learning journey, and I’m looking forward to digging in soon. —Asheritah

• Fall is my favorite season for many reasons, but two of them are quite simple: soup and sweater weather! This chicken enchilada soup is one of my go-tos. I’ve made it dozens and dozens of times over the years! It never fails, and I love that I can make dinner in 5-10 minutes and then have (yummy) leftovers all week. (P.S. I cut the amount of cream cheese in half and it’s delicious, but play around with it/the spices and see what you prefer.) —Kaitlyn

• I’ve already shared several prints from this new-to-me artist, but this one of Aslan and Lucy just captured my heart. I love how she’s running with abandon toward Him, and how the light of His presence filters toward her in twinkling lights. I’ve been feeling a lot like Lucy these days as I’m pondering a weighty decision, and this image fills my heart with both hope and lightness. —Asheritah

• A chai latte is my go-to drink in the morning (and sometimes in the afternoon, too!). Its warm, spicy flavor makes it the perfect companion for the cozy fall season. Lately, I’ve been exploring different chai brands—like this cardamom blend, Oregon Chai, and Sherpa Chai—and I’ve enjoyed them both iced and hot. A friend told me to try mixing in a little apple cider for an autumn twist, and I’m excited to test that out! 🍂☕️ —Kathryn

• One of our favorite December traditions is listening to A Christmas Carol together—hot cocoa in hand, twinkle lights glowing, and everyone piled on the couch. This year, I’m especially excited to pair it with the Little Christmas Carol Activity Book from Moody. The story’s sweet woodland characters and timeless themes of redemption and generosity always spark great conversations, and now my kids can stay engaged with fun, meaningful activities while we listen. It’s such a simple delight that helps us slow down and savor the season. —Asheritah

Fall is slowly becoming my favorite season.

Ohio has been blessed with an unusually sunny autumn, resulting in crisp, bright mornings and even more vibrant leaves. Mornings are cool enough for quiet prayer by the fireplace, and afternoons find us adventuring outdoors.

Oh, the colors and scents and tastes of fall!

This year, my twelve-year-old has been baking these apple dumplings for our community gatherings, and they’re always a hit because they taste exactly like everything you’d hope a fall dessert would be. She’s also experimented with other fall recipes, like these adorable donut-hole-acorns she made for her middle school group at church.

Having kids old enough to delight us with their culinary creations has been an unexpected blessing, especially when it helps us all slow down and savor the seasons. As Anne Shirley would say: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

By the way, I didn’t grow up reading Anne of Green Gables. Did you? It’s only the last couple of years that I’ve picked up some of the American classics, discovering them like hidden gems while homeschooling our kids, and we’re diving headfirst into this collection this fall. If you’re a kindred spirit of Anne’s, which movie adaptation would you recommend I watch with our kids? (The Netflix series was a bit of a let-down after season 1, even for me.)

But why write about movies and books and food in an email about Jesus?

Because:

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17 NIV).

And one of the distinct ways God has restored my joy after a season of intense burnout is through recognizing His pleasure in the simple things that bring a smile to our faces, the Glimmers of Joy that are really signs of His goodness in our lives.1

I write more about this Rhythm of Wonder in my latest book, Delighting in Jesus: Rhythms to Restore Joy When You Feel Burdened, Broken, or Burned-Out, which you can still find wherever books are sold. (Shout-out to readers who still tag me when you find it in your local bookstores.)

Taking this spiritual practice one step further, this past month I’ve tried to pause after writing these Glimmers of Joy in my journal. Take a moment of quiet listening to ask God: “Is there anything You want to say about this? Anything You’d like to add or want me to know?”

Sometimes it’s a verse He brings to mind, sometimes a quiet reassurance. Over the past month, He’s spoken promises over my family and our future, as well as gentle conviction in areas of struggle, and sometimes new ideas. Always, always, He’s drawn my heart back to Himself, my trust and hope in Him alone.

But this listening prayer? It’s brought refreshment to my prayer time with Jesus. I learned to slow down this summer, purposefully walking at the pace of Jesus, taking a break from the busyness to rest and reset—to listen to what He has for me and this ministry next.

And while I still don’t have all the answers, I’m slowly realizing that’s not the point. I’m usually so focused on the surface-level questions, and Jesus is always taking me deeper with Him.

That’s how our conversations usually go: starting with these Glimmers of Joy or what’s heavy on my heart, and then He gently probes to reveal the hidden thing beneath, bringing healing to places I didn’t even realize were hurting. He is the Good Shepherd of our souls who speaks to us in His gentle voice, guiding us with His faithful presence.

It’s only in the last few months that I’ve made it a priority to quiet down and listen to His voice. To ask Him to speak into the mundane parts of my life, from what to discuss with my kids during fall hiking to insights during small group bonfires. He cares about all of it. If only we’d make time to listen to His still, small voice.

This reminds me of what God said to His people long ago:

“This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.’” (Isaiah 30:15 NIV)

May we be people who want ALL of it instead of none of it, like those of old. May we say, “Yes, Lord, I will rest. I will trust. I will quiet my soul and listen.”

And may we receive the salvation—the inner healing and restoration—He longs to bring us day by day, with each new morning, new mercies, fresh grace, in every season.

• My husband bought, restored, and repurposed a centennial standing radio last month. It was nothing short of a labor of love, and every time I look at it in my basement office, it makes me smile, knowing it represents his love in a very trangible way. - Asheritah

One of my favorite habits this summer has been walking around the neighborhood most mornings, basking in the gentle glow of dawn.

Did you know that just ten minutes in that golden light flips on your brain’s “happy switch”? That early morning sunshine boosts serotonin, waking up your body’s natural rhythms, making you happier, and helping you sleep better at night, too.1 What a gift from God—in such a tiny package!

Some days, all I can manage is just those ten minutes. Other mornings, I listen to an audiobook and walk for miles. This morning, I walked to the corner store to pick up a gallon of milk. (Hello neighbors! I’m the weird one carrying groceries home. Blame the European blood in me. lol)

At least twice this summer, I’ve meandered through local cemeteries, pondering the brevity of life. Anyone else fascinated by the names and details on old tombstones? So many life stories reduced to an epitaph.

And you can’t even imagine how many photos of flowers I now have on my camera reel. I think I’m turning into my mom. 🤭

But a few weeks ago, my runner-husband talked me into starting a couch-to-5k running program with him.

Ooomph.

I’ve never experienced a runner’s high. All I know is runner’s exhaustion. But for some reason, Flaviu’s grown to enjoy the sport (he’s finished several half-marathons), and I want to spend more time with him.

So run we shall.

We’d tried to run together years ago, before we had kids, and it just about landed us in marriage counseling. He ran faster than me; I could hardly catch my breath. I wanted to follow a program; he wanted to wing it. So for years, we exercised separately.

But now, we’ve found an easy rhythm of alternating walking and slow running intervals. Flaviu’s slowed down—waaaaaaaaaaay down—to match my pace. We talk about the kids, about our work, about our next trips. We vent, we laugh.

I huff. He hardly breaks a sweat.

And after each interval, we high-five.

Yesterday morning, he headed out early for an eight-mile trail run, while I pushed myself to jog for eight minutes. I almost skipped it, but I laced up anyway, because we’re in this together, even when we’re apart.

I missed him.

But I ran to stay faithful to our commitment.

We met back at the house for coffee, and even though I was tempted to downplay my little run, he greeted me with a high-five.

“You did it!” he cheered.

“I did it.” I echoed. “And you did it too.”

Tomorrow, we’re going to run together again. And I can’t believe I’m saying this—I’m actually looking forward to it. Because I love spending time with him.

And these morning runs? They remind me what it’s like to walk with Jesus. How He condescended to enter into our space. How He slows down, how He listens, how He compassionately walks at the speed of love.

I think of how Jesus is always available to us, waiting for us to join Him.

To take an interest in what interests Him.

To make time to be with Him.

To walk—or run—with Jesus.

So this week, why not lace up your shoes and carve out a little time to walk with Jesus? Whether it’s five minutes around the block or a slow wander through a park, let your steps become a prayer, your breath a reminder of His nearness. He’s already keeping pace with you—just waiting for you to join Him.

• My brother and his family are visiting from Romania for a month, and we’re soaking up all the cousin time we can get! There’s nothing quite like hearing the house filled with laughter, little feet running, and whispered secrets between cousins. —Asheritah

• My son is now old enough that he is allowed to walk home from the bus stop by himself after school. He is so proud to do this big boy thing each day, so when he opens the front door he says in his loudest voice "I'M HOOOOME!" I truly look forward to it every day and wish I could bottle up how cute he is. —Hannah

• My daughter was given some wonderful discipleship tools from The Daily Grace Co for her birthday, and we've recently started using them together. These past few weeks, the word that has resounded in my heart again and again is simply this: beloved.

Flaviu and I celebrated 15 years of marriage in July, and if anyone makes me feel beautiful and beloved, it’s this man. He has loved me through my awkward middle school years and into my angsty high school years; he’s championed me all through college and into launching my writing ministry and sleepless early motherhood, and now into the rollercoaster of parenting tweens.

Whew. We’ve been through a lot together.

And I can’t believe that we’re somehow closer to our own children possibly getting married than to our own wedding day.

How is that possible?1

I’m not rushing my children into adulthood. I’m not. It’s just that milestones make me realize how quickly time passes by. And how desperately I want to hold on to every moment with my own beloved children, before they move on and become adults and live their own lives.

I’ve also been thinking about what it looks like to live beloved by our heavenly Father, especially when we feel out of our element. I attended the Realm Makers’ Conference last month with hundreds of geeky, nerdy, whimsical writers who bring deep theological truths to life through their fantastical stories. It was every bit as bizarre and wonderful as you might imagine, and I loved every minute.

Share ✨ Delighting in Jesus

Of course, I felt a bit like a misfit. What was I doing there? I’m a devotional writer, Bible study author, and conference speaker. I didn’t grow up reading Tolkein. I didn’t get any of the Star Trek jokes. And I definitely didn’t cosplay riding a dragon.

Yet this community of writers welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home.

And in their embrace, I sensed the echo of God’s Spirit whispering to my heart, again and again, “Beloved, you belong.”

He reminded me of these beautiful words, spoken over Jesus after He was baptized, and before He performed a single miracle:

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)

Beloved.

Before any work was done. Beloved.

Before any accolades achieved. Beloved.

Before any mission accomplished. Beloved.

I’m no Jesus. And neither are you. But in Christ, we are all adopted into His family, children of God and coheirs with Christ.2 And every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms has been poured out on us in Christ. (See Ephesians 1:3.)

And this belovedness? It’s threaded through the story of the Bible from Old Testament to New. Here is God’s heart toward His chosen people, in Isaiah 62:5:

“As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you.”

Close your eyes for a minute and picture your Beloved: rejoicing over you. Delighting in you. Pouring His love out toward you.

Can you receive it?

Because God longs for you to live like you are beloved.

Over 69 times this term “beloved” appears in the New Testament, did you know that? It’s a term that emphasizes a love that is chosen and spiritual in nature. You are chosen, you are wanted, you are precious.

If you are in Christ, you are beloved.

Part of the beloved bride of Jesus.

The beloved family of God.

The beloved temple of the Spirit.

Beloved.

• Before you check anything off your list today? You are beloved.

• Before you lose that 10 lbs you’ve been working on? You are beloved.

• Before you fix that bad habit or reach that next milestone? You are beloved.

Beloved. That is who you are.

Then ask: What does this passage reveal about the God who calls me beloved? Let that truth soak in before you move on.

💛 From the Heart

I got to spend a weekend with Rachael Adams at a writing retreat last year, and her gentle wisdom and steady warmth stayed with me long after. It’s a joy to welcome her to this month’s email to share a bit of her heart with us.

How do you think God feels about you? Do you realize how much He loves you?

He’s not shaking His head in disappointment or disgust. He’s not waiting for you to get your act together. He’s rejoicing over you—right now—just because you’re His.

Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord your God is with you… He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Let that sink in: the Creator of the universe is rejoicing over you with singing.

Not because you did everything right. Not because you performed well. Not because you checked all the right boxes. But because you are His beloved child.

You don’t have to earn His affection. You already have it. You don’t have to hustle for His approval. You’re already chosen.

So if you’re feeling like you’re not enough today, pause. Take a breath. Remember whose you are. You are lavishly loved, deeply known, and entirely accepted.

And right now? Your Heavenly Father is singing a love song over your life.

Listen for it. Let it quiet your fears and fill you with peace.

You are His delight.

• This summer we’ve been teaching our kids all kinds of card and board games, including chess and backgammon. It’s been so fun playing with them and watching them play one another. Truly, every new season of motherhood is my new favorite. —Asheritah

Whether they’re soaked from the sprinkler, the neighborhood lake, or grandma’s pool, every time I pick one up, I can’t help but smile and thank God for summer. — Hannah

• I've always dreamed of having a cozy outdoor couch on our back deck. While I was away on vacation, I came home to the most incredible surprise—a full deck makeover! My very own little outdoor oasis now includes comfy seating, charming tables adorned with plants, and a beautiful floral rug that ties it all together. I couldn’t help but cry happy tears. Now, every morning, I wake up feeling giddy at the thought of sipping tea and listening to my current favorite worship album in this peaceful space. — Kathryn

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the beauty of community, especially within the Church. Maybe it’s because on our recent SW trip, I got to meet sisters in Christ all over the country, reminding me that wherever we go, we’ll always have family.

Or maybe it’s because a few weeks ago, I spontaneously joined our church’s middle school group at summer camp—five days of pure energy, joy, worship, deep conversations… and not a lot of sleep. lol

Watching God’s Spirit move among hundreds of Ohioan middle schoolers? And hearing stories of how He is moving all over the world? It was a powerful reminder that the Church is so much bigger than just those gathering in our auditorium on Sunday mornings.

Maybe I’m thinking about this because of the hundreds of women I met at the conferences and retreats I spoke at recently, all united in the name of Jesus and wanting to delight in Him more, recognizing that we are part of a bigger move of God’s Spirit in our generation.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been reflecting on the beauty of women who have served faithfully behind the scenes for thousands of years, a testimony of leadership in the hard and hidden places.

But even as I write this, I’m painfully aware of how this beautiful church can become an ugly bludgeon, delivering devastating blows.

The Church of Jesus, the Bride of Christ, the Community of Believers… she can be so very beautiful when reflecting the love and compassion of Jesus, and so very ugly when acting out of selfish ambition, vanity, and a quest for power.

We see this very dynamic in the pages of the New Testament. Two main themes surface over and over again: the transcendent beauty of Jesus (in His compassionate life, His selfless death, His powerful resurrection, and His hope-filled ascension) and the ugliness of Christian community given over to its selfishness. Acts 2 shows us a church united in charity and generosity, but by Acts 6, it’s fraying due to racial division and economic tensions.

As Philip Ryken writes in Beauty Is Your Destiny:

“There are racial and social dimensions to almost every church conflict that we read about in the rest of the New Testament. Paul told the Galatians that in Jesus Christ, ‘there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female’ (Gal 3:28) because he knew that divisions caused by race, class, and gender posed some of the biggest threats to the witness of the church.”1

And if that was true in Paul’s day nearly two thousand years ago, it’s certainly true today.

It’s kind of depressing when you stop to think about it.

So why do I bring this up in today’s email?

Because just as the church can be the crime scene of our deepest wounds, it can also be the peaceful meadow of our deepest healing.

Some of the throbbing wounds I carry were inflicted by leaders of churches I’ve served in over the years.

And also… some of the most tender conversations that made me feel seen, the most vulnerable confessions that led to freedom, the most comforting embraces and healing prayers and grace-filled wisdom and head-thrown-back-laughter all happened within the Body of Christ.

Over the years, I’ve often wrestled with the Lord in prayer: “Don’t You see how Your bride is misbehaving? Don’t You care that she’s giving You a bad name in the world today? Do something about it!”

And slowly, I’ve come to realize this hopeful truth: He is.

Jesus cares about the Church’s actions even more than you or I ever could. And He is committed to purifying His bride, so that she may appear “in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27). It’s a work that started on the cross, continues through His Spirit’s movement, and will ultimately be completed on the day He returns. It’s not an easy process. It can be quite painful, in fact.

And that cleansing work? It begins in each of us.

The world will know that Christ lives in us by our love—for one another, for those who are like us, for those who see things differently than us, and even for those who oppose us.

As Ryken continues:

“How will the world see how beautiful Jesus is unless the community that bears his name also bears witness to his beauty?”2

Ryken goes on to describe what it looks like to bear witness to the beauty of Jesus, to live out His love in practical ways, and I’ve been prayerfully considering how each of these might work itself out in our own family’s life:

• practicing hospitality: opening our homes, especially to those who are different from us

• showing generosity: meeting a need as soon as we see it

• doing justice: listening to those who’ve been wronged, believing them, and coming up with creative solutions together

• pursuing reconciliation: breaking down walls of hostility and moving toward each other

• living in unity: keeping Jesus at the center of our identities and conversations, and celebrating our diversity in its many facets

It is not enough for us to personally delight in Jesus in our individual quiet times, if that delight does not overflow into lives of generous love poured out toward our family, our neighborhood, our church, our city, and our world.

Loving others not because we have to, but because we can’t help but reflect Jesus’ radical love toward every person He brings across our paths.

As Tim Keller so deftly puts it:

“When the fear and the pride go away and all we see is the beauty of what He’s done—then we can love Him just because He’s beautiful.

Because of all He’s given me, I don’t have to do anything to get anything; I just want Him. I can love the poor for the poor’s sake. I can love God for God’s sake—that’s the beauty that will change your heart.

That’s the beauty that will get you out of yourself forever.”3

That’s the beauty that I’ve witnessed in the church this spring, amid all the ugliness happening in the world today. And that’s the beauty of Jesus that I want to nurture more and more in my own life, in our family, and in our community.

I don’t have all the answers here, clearly. But I have seen the beauty of the Church in my own life, God’s healing power moving through her in myriad ways, and I’m here saying, “Come quickly, Lord Jesus. And in the meantime, lead us in becoming a Church that would reveal more and more of Your beauty to this onlooking world.”

How has your summer started so far? I can’t believe it’s already June!

By the time you read this, we’ll be settling home after our 8-week family road-trip in the SW, and goodness, what an adventure it’s been: packed with natural beauty, quality time, spiritual refreshment, wonder in creation, lots of sleep, good coffee, and delicious ice cream.

“I want to hear more about the trip,” well-meaning friends ask me. But how do you summarize the mountaintops and valley-lows of 56 adventurous days in two polite minutes?

How can I capture the grandeur and glory and beauty of God in the sights and smells and scenes we witnessed with awe-struck gazes?

So when I stumbled upon a verse tucked next to the boxed pasta and filtered water of a grocery store in Estes Park, I paid attention:1

What a fitting verse for all we’d been experiencing! As a family, we agreed to memorize it next, after we’d finished Psalm 121. So, of course, I’ve been paying attention to these themes, and just a couple of weeks ago, I jotted this quote in my journal:

“God has put his beauty into the world, and we are witnesses. […] When we keep our eyes wide open, we see the beauty of God everywhere we look, from earth to sky.” (Philip Ryken, Beauty Is Your Destiny, pp 5, 17)

I want to see God’s beauty. I truly do. So this prayer has been echoing in my heart for months now, but especially these last few weeks: “Open my eyes to see Your hand at work, Lord.” I don’t want to miss His beauty in the world around me.

And He has answered that prayer a hundredfold.

When watching an osprey dive into the waters to catch its prey: “O God, Your deeds are extraordinary!”

When sloshing through the snow to hike up to Dream Lake, nestled in the Rocky Mountains: “What God can compare to our great God?”

When visiting the vast array of arches and canyons: “O God, Your deeds are extraordinary!”

When inspiration strikes for fresh book ideas: “What God can compare to our great God?”

These last weeks, I feel like I’ve awakened from a years-long slumber, a fog induced by mindlessly scrolling and unwittingly consuming what the world offered on a silver screen.

And instead, I get to wander through my Father’s world with eyes wide open and heart beating wild as I wonder at all He has done in creation, and all He continues to do in my life.

I’m writing these words as we travel the last hundred miles to get home, and I’m well aware that this dreamy road trip life is coming to an end. We’ll be washing laundry, and mowing the lawn, and sorting through piles of mail next week. Yet I still want to hold on to this sense of God’s grandeur and glory in the world all around us. I want to continue living with eyes wide open to see the beautiful evidence of His hand at work in this world.

As the words of this old hymn I’ve been humming lately read:

This is my Father's world:
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their Maker's praise.

This is my Father's world:
He shines in all that's fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.

Devotional thoughts to draw your heart closer to His.

The page of now-familiar letters sits beside my kitchen sink, a subtle reminder of a solid anchor that will hold no matter what my day holds. I see it again, a temporary tattoo on my wrist, as I run errands, turn the pages of a book and even now, as I type these words to you.

Eventually, the seemingly random letters on my wrist will fade. One day, I’ll place a new piece of paper beside the sink, another line that looks like a strange code but is actually a comfort.

For now, though, I’m stuck on B B I T O W T I T L W C I I H.

There are things I’m desperately praying for, and this verse doesn’t say I’ll be blessed by receiving my exact prayer request in a certain timeframe—or at all! But as I go about my ordinary life, as I stir soup simmering on the stovetop and stare at this truth, as I wash dishes and remember the promise, as I glance down at my wrist and whisper the words once more, the string of letters points me not to a particular timeline, but to the One who holds time.

And in remembering Him, in resting in the One whose character does not change no matter my circumstances, my confidence overflows.

Dinner will need to be made again tomorrow. There will be new errands to run and more work to be done. Today holds so much and tomorrow brings many unknowns. The miracles I’m asking for might arrive overnight, but if not, I’ll ask once again when dawn arrives.

But I’m already blessed, even as I wait. Even as I wash dishes and the suds cover a temporary tattoo that will disappear in the next few days, and even as I open my computer to write these lines to you… Because I have Him, here, in the beautiful ordinary right now. And He’s enough.

We’ve been on the road for almost a month—long enough that we’ve worn out the newness of living in a camper, but only halfway through the gorgeous parks we’re visiting on our 8-week SW trip.

If we were playing road trip bingo, I’m pretty sure we’d fill out the whole board:

• Engine trouble? Check! Three days in, we almost abandoned our trip due to transmission fluid leaks. Eek!

• S’mores by the fire? Check. At the Grand Canyon, no less. Before we found out there was a burn ban in effect. Oops!1

• Exotic animals spotted? Quadruple check! We’ve seen roadrunners, bison, condors, prairie dogs, mule deer, pronghorn antelopes, and so many more.

• Epic hikes? Infinity check. I can’t even keep count anymore. (My phone’s photo albums are bursting at the seams. Send help.)2

As a family, we’ve been memorizing Psalm 121 together as the theme of this trip. So far we’ve got verses 1-4 down:

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

Did you know that Jewish pilgrims sang this psalm on their annual trip to the Temple in Jerusalem?3 They would have traveled through rocky mountains during the day; they would have faced the danger of bandits and wild animals at night; they would have spent hours on the road, eating stale food and catching up on family developments as they traveled in community to worship at their sacred festivals. Notice how the verses above parallel their journey?

The Israelites embodied their theology, taking cues from their lived experiences to teach their families about the nature of God. And as a family, we have been learning to do the same.

We’ve had beautiful conversations with our children these weeks, based on the rich theology in this psalm:

• When driving through the Sonoran desert, spotted with Saguaro cacti, we celebrated that our Lord “made heaven and earth” and created places so different from our home in Ohio. God is our Creator.

• When gazing up at the dark skies over the Grand Canyon, sighting Mars and Jupiter, Orion and Polaris, we worshiped the One who made them all and knows them by name. Our God “will never slumber nor sleep.”

• When descending a steep cliff into Bryce Canyon, pebbles falling hundreds of feet down, we rejoiced that “he will not let your foot be moved.” What an assurance that God is our Protector.

It seems each week brings a new opportunity to celebrate our Maker’s ingenuity and creativity in how He fashioned the heavens and the earth, and also in how He protects our little family on our trip. And I can’t help but imagine the joy of our heavenly Father as we see the gifts of His bounty and receive them with glad and thankful hearts.

But as we discussed last month, you don’t have to embark on an epic pilgrimage to rediscover joy or to see God’s beauty in creation. God has sprinkled bits of glory all around us, even in our own backyards.

As you look out your own window today, where do you see our Maker’s creativity? Take a moment to worship in wonder and awe. He is the One who made the heavens and all the gorgeous corners of the earth.

And as you think back on last month, where can you recognize our Keeper’s protection? Think about how He watched over you, and thank Him for His personal involvement in your life.

My kids and I are doing this for Psalm 121 (so like: “I L U M E T T H F W D M H C” for Psalm 121:1). It’s surprisingly effective—and so fun to see how fast it starts sticking in your memory. • Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the kind of family culture I want my kids to remember. That’s why I’ve been loving Erin Davis’s new Bible study, The Story of Joseph. Just a few weeks in, it’s already led me to reflect deeply on my own childhood, the heritage I hope to pass on, and the generational patterns I’m praying will end with me. If you’re craving hope and healing in your family story, this is such a timely and meaningful study. - Asheritah

• I have had the most surprising joy inside of craft stores recently. I’m not good at drawing or particularly crafty, but in the last few months, I decided to scrapbook. Something about physically printing pictures that usually just live on my phone and tapping them to pages covered in hearts has been so fun! - Hannah

• The green dress I wore through Antelope Canyon above? I bought it this spring off of Amazon, and I’ve already worn it more times than I can count. It’s flowy, feminine, and somehow flattering every single time (seriously—I get compliments whenever I wear it!). I just wish it had pockets… but even without them, it’s become a fast favorite. - Asheritah

• Fresh flowers from the grocery store! The $4 bouquet of beauty has added a splash of color, life, and joy to my counter, amidst dishes and mail that needs to be sorted. :) - Kaitlyn

• As we’ve been driving through the dry, rugged beauty of the Southwest, I’ve found myself thinking often about the wilderness stories in Scripture—how God used those barren places to lead, refine, and prepare His people. That’s why A Way in the Wilderness by Kristel Acevedo feels especially timely. It’s a 6-week study that reminds us God is near in the midst of our wandering, using even the hard seasons to grow something good. If you’re feeling a little lost, lonely, or in-between right now, this would be a gentle companion for the journey. - Asheritah

• We’ve had this artist on repeat lately—at home, in the car, everywhere! The songs are super catchy, and the lyrics are so uplifting. You seriously can’t help but feel joyful listening to this worship music! - Kathryn

💛 From the Heart: Carrying the Kingdom, by Hannah Nitz

Devotional thoughts to draw your heart closer to His.

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
—Matthew 6:10

“Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.”

For a long time, that quote summed up how I represented Jesus—through kindness and living differently. I believed the best thing I could offer someone was a good Christian version of myself, no words needed.

But recently, God has been opening my eyes to something deeper. What if the best thing I could bring wasn’t me, but the Kingdom of God?

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus begins with, “Your Kingdom come.” That’s His first prayer request! When I think of God’s Kingdom, I picture His will, His power, and His authority. So wherever I go, I want to carry that Kingdom with me—just as Jesus did. Reflecting on the truth that I carry God's Kingdom as His ambassador has become a regular practice of mine.

So how do we live this out? It requires some words! Let’s follow Jesus’ lead and begin by praying, “Your Kingdom come,” in as many situations as possible. This can be under our breath as we walk into a room, or out loud as we lay hands and pray for someone. Praise God that His Spirit lives within us and leads us into all truth! As we desire His Kingdom to reign, He will show each of us what to do.

If there’s one thing I know, it’s this: joy isn’t something we stumble upon—it’s something we step into.

Not the kind of joy that depends on Amazon Prime deliveries (though I won’t say no to a surprise package on my doorstep). Not the kind that comes and goes with the weather (especially if you live in Ohio, like me). But the deep, steady joy that holds firm, even when life feels messy.

And guess what? That joy is already yours in Jesus.

The problem? We forget. We rush. We wait for things to feel just right before we let joy in.

But joy isn’t waiting for you in another season, another version of yourself, or another to-do list completed. Joy is here, right now, tucked into the ordinary moments of your life.

And that’s exactly why I’m writing to you today.

This is a new rhythm we’re trying this year—a little slower, a little deeper, a little more life-giving. In the fall, we’ll check in to see how it’s going!

💛 From the Heart

A couple weeks ago, our middle daughter turned nine (how is that possible?), marking the second Ciuciu child to reach the halfway point of her time at home with us. Each year I’m more convinced that “The days are long, but the years are short,” as so many older mamas told me in the bleary newborn stage.

How true.

And I want to soak up every moment of these golden years.

We’re already doing that in many ways (from homeschooling to working from home), but this month, our family is setting off on one of our biggest adventures yet: an 8-week road trip through the stunning landscapes of the Southwest!

I’m equal parts thrilled and nervous (“This will be fun” and also “Oh my gosh, what did we just commit to?!”). 🤪 Thankfully, not only does my husband support my wild ideas, but he brings a measure of sanity to them, too. (Originally, I lobbied for a year-long trip in Europe, but we negotiated a manageable two-month stint in the SW. lol)

Will this trip bring us all closer? Yes, probably.

Will it be the adventure of a lifetime? Yes, absolutely.

Will it increase our appreciation for separate bedrooms and doors that lock? You betcha.

Because, yes, we’ll all be squished together in a 28-foot travel trailer. Pray for us? 😂

I’m sure it’ll stretch our patience as much as our faith—but maybe that’s part of the gift too. (On the bright side, we’re each bringing only a backpack’s worth of clothing, so… less laundry, I guess?)

Even with all the unknowns, I’m glad we’re doing this. I can’t wait to guide my children as we walk through God’s creation, wonder at His glory, and worship Him in nature. I keep picturing us whispering conversations with Him at the Grand Canyon and seeing His Word come to life with every sunrise and sunset, fossil dig, and mountain hike. It’s going to be an epic adventure!

In many ways, it feels like the next big step in my journey with Jesus, too. You see, it’s been two years now of God restoring my joy in small, ordinary moments, and as our trip draws closer, it feels like an invitation to take what I’ve learned at home and practice it on a pilgrimage.

I might write more about this notion of wilderness wanderings and what it means to be a pilgrim in our 21st-century lives in upcoming emails or notes, but for now, let me implore you not to wait for future happiness:

• When I get a pay raise, then I’ll be happy.

• When I go on that fancy vacation, then I’ll be happy.

• When I get a boyfriend/get married/get pregnant, then I’ll be happy.

• When I lose this weight, then I’ll be happy.

• When my house is finally clean and quiet, then I’ll be happy.

None of those desires are bad, in and of themselves. But none of them hold the key to happiness either. True joy, true satisfaction, is found in Christ alone, and He’s already filled our lives with the fingerprints of His presence (and His presents). If only we would learn to see.

Learning to see and savor God’s good gifts in my normal life has rewired my brain for joy these last two years. And recent brain research confirms that gratitude actually changes our brain’s structure—making us happier and more content (source). No wonder God invites us to give thanks!

As Scripture says:

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17 NIV)

While I’m excited to unwrap the gifts our Father prepared for our family on this trip, you don’t have to go on an epic adventure for God to heal your heart and restore your joy. After all, that’s not how He started this work in my life either.

God’s love and goodness are all around us, right in our ordinary daily lives. I wonder how God is inviting you to recognize and receive the good gifts He’s placed in your life today? Pause your scroll, and take a moment to ponder that with Jesus.

• I asked all my friends and family to fill out a March Madness bracket and we are in a big group text with 50 of us who did it! Every day I send updates about the games and everyone’s standings, and it makes me so happy. - Hannah

I started writing devotionals over a decade ago as a way to help women like you (and me!) find joy in the presence of Jesus every day. What started as a weekly rhythm of encouragement has turned into over 600 devotionals, and an entire library of books, podcasts, and videos all centered around this mission: to help you delight in Jesus—especially when life feels hard and heavy.

Why Substack, and Why Now?

As I lean into a personal year of Jubilee, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to celebrate what God has done, slow down to rest, and make space for the new things He’s leading us into.

That’s why I’m transitioning from weekly emails to this new monthly rhythm—The Delighting in Jesus Companion, so we can go deeper instead of just doing more. This will give me and my team space to curate even richer content that will bless your heart—without overwhelming your inbox.

Think of it as a soul care package delivered to your inbox each month, filled with joy, encouragement, and practical resources to help you delight in Jesus.

We’ll try this format through December and follow the Lord’s leading for 2026. (And yes—you’ll be part of that decision-making with us in the fall!)
